Klaviyo email benchmarks: is your account actually healthy?

Benchmarks get abused. Every list is different, industries vary, and a store sending two campaigns a week to an engaged list will never look like one blasting daily to everyone. Still, you need reference points, because "40% open rate" means nothing until you know whether that's good.

These are the thresholds we use when we audit ecommerce Klaviyo accounts, based on Klaviyo's published benchmarks and what we see across the accounts we manage.

The five numbers to check

Open rate: aim for 30% or better on campaigns. Ecommerce email benchmarks sit around 30%. Accounts sending to engaged segments routinely run 38 to 42%. If you're under 25%, your problem is usually list hygiene or targeting, not subject lines. One of our accounts sends over 7 million emails a month and holds a 40% open rate; the trick is who they don't send to.

Click-to-open rate: 8% is the reference, most stores run lower. Of the people who opened, how many clicked? Below 8% means opens aren't turning into visits. This is the most commonly weak number we see. An account can have beautiful 40% opens and a 2% click-to-open, which usually points to weak CTAs, image-heavy templates, or sends that give no reason to click. Fixing this is worth real money: on a large list, moving click-to-open from 2% to 3% is thousands of extra sessions per send.

Bounce rate: keep it at or under 2%. Above that and you're mailing addresses that don't exist, which mailbox providers read as carelessness. Rising bounces usually mean signups aren't being verified or an old segment got pulled into rotation.

Spam complaint rate: at or under 0.1%. This is the one that can sink the whole program. Past roughly 0.1%, and especially near Gmail and Yahoo's 0.3% enforcement line, inbox placement degrades for everything you send. If complaints are climbing, cut send volume to unengaged profiles immediately, then investigate.

Unsubscribe rate: at or under 0.5% per send. Unsubscribes are healthier than spam complaints (better an unsubscribe than a complaint), but a climbing rate means frequency or relevance is off.

How to read them together

One bad number is a task. Several bad numbers form a pattern:

Checking this without building a spreadsheet

You can pull every one of these numbers from Klaviyo's reports, and if you do it quarterly, that's fine.

We wanted them checked continuously, so our tool, RaziCo Dash AI (free, we built it), compares your bounce, spam, unsubscribe, open, and click rates against benchmarks automatically and shows a green or amber flag per metric, plus an overall account health grade. It also alerts you when spam or bounce rates spike, which is the moment benchmarks stop being academic. Read-only API key, free while in beta: dash.razico.co

FAQ

Do these apply to flows too? Flows run much higher than campaigns because the audience asked for them. Welcome flows at 45 to 70% opens are normal. Judge flows against your own flow history, not campaign benchmarks.

My open rate jumped after iOS privacy changes. Is it real? Partially inflated, for everyone. That's why click-to-open and revenue per recipient matter more than opens alone.

How often should I check? Deliverability numbers weekly, or put alerts on them. Everything else, monthly is enough to act on.
