Are you overpaying for Klaviyo? How to check in 2 minutes

Klaviyo bills you by active profiles. Not by how much you send, and not by how much you make. That pricing model has one big consequence: every dead profile on your list costs you money every single month.

Most accounts we audit are paying for a meaningful chunk of profiles who haven't opened anything in a year. Here's how to check yours.

Step 1: Find what you're paying for

In Klaviyo, your plan page shows your active profile count and monthly price. Write both down. Klaviyo's pricing tiers step up with list size, so the number that matters is which tier you're in, not just the raw count.

Step 2: Find your real marketable audience

Build a segment: "can receive email marketing" OR "can receive SMS marketing." That's everyone you can legally and practically send to. If this number is well below your active profile count, you're paying for profiles you can't even email.

Step 3: Find the dead weight

Build one more segment: profiles who haven't opened or clicked in 180 days and haven't purchased in that window either. On mature lists this is routinely 20 to 40% of the total. These profiles do three bad things at once: they inflate your bill, they drag your open rates down, and mailing them hurts deliverability for everyone else.

Step 4: Do the math

If suppressing or removing the dead segment drops you into a lower pricing tier, that's a permanent monthly saving for an hour of work. A store with 250K active profiles pays Klaviyo roughly $2,300 a month at list price. Trimming 30% of dead profiles can step that down materially, and the open-rate improvement comes free with it.

Before deleting anyone, run a sunset flow: two or three "still want to hear from us?" emails to the disengaged segment. The few who re-engage stay. The rest get suppressed with a clean conscience. Our core flows post covers how.

The part people miss: this drifts

You clean the list once, feel good, and 18 months later the dead weight is back, because it accumulates a few hundred profiles a week. This is a recurring check, not a one-time project.

That's why we built the cost check into our dashboard. RaziCo Dash AI (free, we built it, read-only) reads your marketable audience size, estimates your Klaviyo cost from Klaviyo's published pricing, and tracks your net list growth continuously, so you can see dead weight building before it costs you a tier. FAQ

Won't shrinking my list shrink my revenue? Revenue comes from people who open and buy. Profiles that haven't engaged in six months contribute close to nothing, and suppressing them usually improves deliverability enough that revenue per send goes up.

Suppress or delete? Suppress first. Suppressed profiles can't be mailed but their history is kept. Note that suppressed profiles may still count toward billing depending on how you handle them, so for billing relief you'll want them out of your active count. Check the current Klaviyo policy before bulk deleting.

How often should I run this check? Quarterly is enough for most stores. Monthly if you're near a pricing tier boundary.
